A 70-year-old 'lolo' from the province was accompanied by a grandson to the US Embassy in Manila for his VISA interview. The lolo spoke not a word of English so the grandson translated for him.

The consul told the young man to ask his grandfather why he wanted to go to the States. "Bakit daw ho ninyo gustong pumunta sa Amerika?" the grandson translated. "Sabihin mo gusto kong makita yung mga anak ko doon." "He said
he wants to see his children there." Fair enough, that's what the lolo's application indicated.

The consul had another question. "Ask him why does he have to go there? Why can't his children just come and visit him here?" The grandson translated this in Tagalog. Lolo replied: "Sabihin mo kasi dito pinanganak yung mga anak ko. Nakita na nila and Pilipinas. Gusto ko namang makita and Amerika bago ako mamatay." (Translation: "Tell him, my children were born
here. They've seen the Philippines already. I just want to see America before I die.")

The heartless consul was unimpressed as he declared, devoid of any emotion, that he was rejecting the visa application because the applicant was unable to speak a word of English.

"Reject daw yung visa ninyo kasi hindi daw kayo marunong mag-Ingles."

The lolo was equally unimpressed.

"Sabihin mo ito sa kanya at huwag mong papalitan ang sasabihin ko. Putang ina niya, bakit siya nandidito eh hindi naman siya marunong mag-Tagalog."

Translated: "He said: you son of a bitch, how come you are here...you do not know how to speak in Tagalog."

Taken a back, sense of humor still intact, the consul relented and approved lolo's visa application in pronto.

As you know, we have plenty of Koreans currently
studying in the Philippines to take advantage of our cheaper tuition
fees and learn English at the same time. This is an essay written
by a Korean student we want to share with you.

My Short Essay about the Philippines
Jaeyoun Kim

Filipinos always complain about the corruption in
the Philippines.
Do you really think the corruption is the problem of
the Philippines? I do not think so. I strongly believe
that the problem is the lack of love for the Philippines.

Let me first talk about my country, Korea. It might
help you understand my point. After the Korean War, South
Korea was one of the poorest countries in the world. Koreans had to
start from scratch because entire country was destroyed completely after the
Korean War, and we had no natural resources.

Koreans used to talk about the Philippines, for
Filipinos were very rich in Asia. We envy Filipinos. Koreans really
wanted to be well off like Filipinos. Many Koreans died of famine. My
father's brother also died because of famine.

Korean government was awfully corrupt and is still
very corrupt beyond your imagination, but Korea was able to
develop dramatically because Koreans really did their best for the
common good with their heart burning with patriotism. Koreans did not work just for themselves but also for their neighborhood and country.
Education inspired young men with the spirit of patriotism.

40 years ago, President Park took over the
government to reform Korea. He tried to borrow money from other
countries, but it was not possible to get a loan and attract a foreign
investment because the economy situation of South Korea was so bad. Korea
had only three factories. So, President Park sent many mine workers
and nurses to Germany so that they could send money to Korea to
build a factory.
They had to go through a horrible experience. In
1964, President Park visited Germany to borrow money. Hundred of
Koreans in Germany came to the airport to welcome him and cried there
as they saw the President Park. They asked to him, "President, when
can we be well off?" That was the only question everyone asked to
him. President Park cried with them and promised them that Korea
would be well off if everyone works hard for Korea, and the President
of Germany got the strong impression on them and lent money to
Korea. So, President Park was able to build many factories in Korea.

He always asked Koreans to love their country from
their heart. Many Korean scientists and engineers in the USA came back
to Korea to help developing country because they wanted their
country to be well off.

Though they received very small salary, they did
their best for Korea. They always hoped that their children would
live in well off country.

My parents always brought me to the places where
poor and physically handicapped people live. They wanted me to
understand their life and help them. I also worked for Catholic Church when I
was in the army.
The only thing I learned from Catholic Church was
that we have to love our neighborhood. And I have loved my
neighborhood.

Have you cried for the Philippines? I have cried for
my country several times. I also cried for the Philippines
because of so many poor people.

I have been to the New Bilibid prison. What made me
sad in the prison were the prisoners who do not have any love
for their country. They go to mass and work for Church. They
pray everyday.
However, they do not love the Philippines. I talked
to two prisoners at the maximum security compound, and both of them
said that they would leave the Philippines right after they are
released from the prison. They said that they would start a new life
in other countries and never come back to the Philippines.

Many Koreans have a great love for Korea so that we
were able to share our wealth with our neighborhood. The owners
of factory and company were distributed their profit to their
employees fairly so that employees could buy what they needed and saved
money for the future and their children.

When I was in Korea, I had a very strong faith and
wanted to be a priest. However, when I came to the Philippines, I
completely lost my faith. I was very confused when I saw many
unbelievable situations in the Philippines. Street kids always make me sad,
and I see them everyday. The Philippines is the only Catholic
country in Asia, but there are too many poor people here. People go to
church every Sunday to pray, but nothing has been changed. My
parents came to the Philippines last week and saw this situation. They
told me that Korea was much poorer than the present Philippines
when they were young.
They are so sorry that there so many beggars and
street kids. When we went to Pasangjan, I forced my parents to take a
boat because it would fun.
However, they were not happy after taking a boat.
They said that they would not take the boat again because they
were sympathized the boat
men, for the boat men were very poor and had a small
frame. Most of people just took a boat and enjoyed it. But my
parents did not enjoy it because of love for them.

My mother who has been working for Catholic Church
since I was very young told me that if we just go to mass without
changing ourselves,
we are not Catholic indeed. Faith should come with
action. She added that I have to love Filipinos and do good things for
them because all of us are same and have received a great love
from God.

I want Filipinos to love their neighborhood and
country as much as they love God so that the Philippines will be well
off. I am sure that love is the keyword which Filipinos should
remember. We cannot
change the sinful structure at once. It should start from person.
Love must start in everybody in a small scale and
have to grow. A lot of things happen if we open up to love. Let's
put away our prejudices and look at our worries with our new
eyes. I discover that every person is worthy to be loved. Trust in
love, because it makes changes possible. Love changes you and me. It
changes people, contexts and relationships. It changes the world.

Please love your neighborhood and country. Jesus
Christ said that whatever we do to others we do to Him. In the
Philippines, there is God for people who are abused and abandoned. There
is God who is crying for love. If you have a child, teach them how
to love the Philippines. Teach them why they have to love their
neighborhood and country.

You already know that God also will be very happy if
you love others. That's all I really want to ask you Filipinos.

Now i will second her/his curiousity. Is the
Philippines worth crying for.......

Who will shed tears for the Motherland?
Who will lend a hand to lift her spirit,
to hold the lonely Flag that symbolize her name?

could say or ask that I would find offensive." "Well, I've always
had a fantasy to have a Nun kiss me." She responds, "Well, let's
see what we can do about that: #1, you have to be single and
#2, you must be Catholic." The cab driver is very excited and
says, "Yes, I am single; and I 'm Catholic too!" "OK" the Nun
says. "Pull into the next alley." He does and the Nun
fulfills his fantasy with a kiss that would make a hooker blush.
But when they get back on the road, the cab driver starts
crying. "My dear child, said the nun, why are you
crying?" "Forgive me Sister, but I have sinned. I lied. I must
confess, I'm married and I'm Jewish."
The nun says, "That's OK, my name is Kevin and I'm on my
way to a Halloween party."

Asian (Filipino) Businessman Named Ernst & Young
World Entrepreneur Of The Year®

Fourth annual Ernst & Young event sees Tony Tan Caktiong, head of Jollibee Foods Corporation, selected from field of 31 nominees

Filipino businessman Tony Tan Caktiong, head of Jollibee Foods Corporation, was this evening named Ernst & Young’s 2004 World Entrepreneur Of The Year® (WEOY) at an award ceremony in Monte Carlo, Monaco.

From modest beginnings as the owner of two ice cream parlors in Manila in the 1970s, Jollibee has grown to become one of the most admired and respected companies in Asia.

Jollibee Foods Corporation now employs 26,000 people in almost 1,000 outlets in seven countries, including the United States and China. In the Philippines, Jollibee commands 65% of the domestic fast food market, competing very successfully against established global brands. In 1993, it became the first food service company to be listed on the Philippine Stock Exchange. In the ten years since, the company has been consistently profitable, reaching an annual turnover in 2003 of over 470 million euros.

Ernst & Young Chairman, James S. Turley, said: “These awards are about celebrating global entrepreneurship and the desire to continually innovate and expand. Tony’s story is a truly inspirational one, on both these counts. We are delighted he has been selected to receive this year’s award.”

Over the next five years Jollibee will continue to expand its presence in China and elsewhere, staying one step ahead of the competition by recognizing the requirements and tastes of local markets, and providing a high quality of service and product. As he says himself, Tony is Jollibee’s toughest quality controller.

“Tony’s success is due to his ability to innovate, to look ahead, and to build an exceptional brand,” said Gregory K. Ericksen, Global Director of the Ernst & Young Entrepreneur Of The Year® program.

”’The Jollibee indicator’, based on the company’s sales, is accepted as an unofficial measure of the health of the wider Filipino economy, and the company logo – a distinctive red bee – has become the Philippine national symbol of happiness.”

The judges identified the ability of Jollibee to fund its own growth by reinvesting its profits. Tony still retains a 65% share of ownership. “This is a success story based on solid foundations, not a meteor that will burn itself out,” said Howard Stevenson, Professor of Entrepreneurship at Harvard Business School, and Chairman of the judging panel.

Tony was selected as the World Entrepreneur Of The Year from a field of 31 entrants – each of whom has been named Entrepreneur Of The Year (EOY) in national or regional programs run by Ernst & Young.

Collectively, the 31 finalists in this year’s WEOY awards program employ more than 375,000 people and represent approximately 23 billion euros in revenue.

The panel of nine judges – all of whom are past participants in the Entrepreneur Of The Year program in his or her country – chose Caktiong as the recipient of the award based on written applications and meetings held throughout the course of the four-day event.

The WEOY program was established four years ago, and builds on Ernst & Young’s 18 years of success in running national EOY programs. The EOY award was begun by Ernst & Young in the United States in 1986 to recognize entrepreneurs who had created and sustained successful, growing business ventures. Since then, the program has grown throughout the world, expanding to six continents and more than 100 cities.

In 2003, Narayana Murthy, founder and chairman of Infosys Technologies Limited, headquartered in India, was named the World Entrepreneur Of The Year. Other previous winners were Stefan Vilsmeier, President and CEO of BrainLAB AG, headquartered in Germany, in 2002, and Italian Paolo della Porta, President, Chariman and Group CEO of Saes Getter S.p.A, in 2001.

Tropical RP bags gold, world crown — in ice skating

The Philippine Star 08/24/2004

Here’s one Philippine contingent that struck gold.

Two years too early for the 2006 Turin Winter Olympics, skaters from the SM Philippines ice skating team brought home an impressive 90 golds, 62 silvers and 26 bronze medals to top this year’s Ice Skating Institute of America (ISIA) World Championships in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

The SM team, which included 43 skaters from the SM Megamall and SM Southmall rinks, scored 776.5 points to beat 88 teams from the United Arab Emirates, Thailand, Mexico and the United States, which fielded teams from 24 states.

It was an emotional moment when SM first vice president Ric Camaligan received the trophy for the Philippine team. The audience gave a standing ovation to the team, which defied many odds, including an improbable climate.

The White Bear Lake Sports team from the US placed second with 686.3 points while the Plymouth Ice Center took third place with 647.8 points.

What made the victory of the contingent from a tropical country more remarkable was that it was the first by a non-US team since the ISIA was organized in 1959.

The Filipino skaters’ participation can be compared to the experience of the Jamaican bobsledding team in the 1988 Calgary Olympic Winter Games, which became the subject of the 1993 Disney comedy movie "Cool Runnings."

But unlike the Jamaican team — which finished last — the Philippine skaters stamped their class in the Minnesota competitions.

Among the standouts in the team were Cara Naomi Damian, who brought home three gold, four silver and three bronze medals, and Bien Bergonia who garnered two gold, five silver and five bronze medals.

Other skaters who won multiple medals were Dale Feliciano (four golds and two silver medals), Celine Gabrielle Gabrieta (three golds, two silvers and one bronze), Jazz Ashley Tulda (three golds and two silvers), Marc Camaligan (three golds and one silver), Arlene Cariño (three golds and one silver), Francesca Recasata (three golds and two silvers), Danica Icanranom (four golds) and Roxanne Puno (three gold medals).

The Champion’s trophy brought home by the SM team features a transparent globe mounted on a miniature Phantom Skate Blade, a brand of ice skates said to be favored by Olympic competitors.

This year was the 11th time that SM, which also participates in Asian competitions, sent a delegation to the ISIA World Competition. With one exception, all 43 skaters learned to skate from formal lessons at the SM Megamall and SM Southmall ice skating rinks.

By Ricardo F. Lo
The Philippine Star 08/05/2004

Asked not so long ago what she had to say about "sex and violence" in the movies, a popular actress said, "Piano nga hindi ako marunong tumugtog, violins pa kaya?"

Hmmmmm. Witty? Yes – if she intended that "quotable" to be so.

No, the actress "spokening" wasn't Melanie Marquez who, like that one, is a self-confessed Madame Malaprop. (Note: Malapropism, meaning "a ludicrous misuse of a word," is derived from Mrs. Malaprop, a character in the play The Rivals by Richard B. Sheridan, 1751-1816)

I love my long-legged friend Melanie for, among other reasons (besides her fractured English), her way of unwittingly amusing and regaling us with her, that's it, malapropisms on national television. During the passionate word war between her half-brother Joey Marquez and Kris Aquino, Melanie provided the "comic relief" by mouthing quotables, thus firming up her reputation as the (uncrowned) Quotable Queen.

The good thing about it is that Melanie herself is amused/regaled by those little jewels tumbling out of her mouth, profusely especially when she's angry. She told me that she would have her TV guestings recorded and once she got home, she'd have a fun time watching the tapes and, yes, laughing at herself.

That's the spirit, 'no?

"Bakit," Melanie said during an interview. "'Yung magagaling mag-English diyan, may Miss International title ba sila?"

Oo nga naman. Mayroon ba kayo?

Don't look now but Melanie is seriously thinking of compiling her "Melanisms" into a neat little book like the pocket-size Mao little red book (of quotations, or Maoisms). Nice idea, isn't it? It should be a best-seller (like President Joseph Estrada's Eraptions).

When Melanie told me about it, I suggested that she jazz up the book with cartoons and call it Quote Me. But wait. Don't judge Melanie just yet because, as we all know, she's not a book.

Here and now, my friend Jonathan Chua (who's a STAR contributor) has compiled some Melanisms for inclusion in that much-awaited book, to wit:

• My brother is not a girl; he's a gentleman.

• That's why I'm a success, it's because I don't middle in other people's lives.

• Don't judge my brother; he's not a book.

• I won't stoop down to my level.

• Hello? Bulag ka ba? Bingi ka ba? Are you dep?

• 'Yung STD, baka sa maruming toilet lang niya nakuha yan.

• Eh, ikaw ba naman, durugin ang ari mo... Pag di ka naman manutok ng baril.

• We are lovers, not fighters.

• Kapatid ko pa rin siya. We are one and the same.

• I don't eat meat. I'm not a carnival.

• Eto na po ang pinakamaligayang pasko at manigong taon sa inyong lahat. (During her acceptance speech at a Metro Filmfest awards night where her bioflick, directed by her late father Temyong Marquez, won an award.)

• Sumasakit ang migraine ko.

• Ang tatay ko ang only living legend na buhay!

• Period na talaga; wala nang exclamation point. (When asked on S-Files if her present husband, Adam Lawyer, is her Mr. Right.).

• At a talk show after her break-up with Derek Dee, Melanie was asked if she had some words for Derek's mother (whom she partly blamed for the separation). "Oo nga," said Melanie, "pero i-English-in ko para maintindihan niya." She looked into the camera and, with the peremptoriness of royalty, said, "And to you, Mrs. Dee, I have two words for you. Ang labo mo!"

Said Jonathan, "Isn't she adorable?"

Oh, yes, Jonathan, she is, she really is!

Between now and the time Quote Me is published, I'm sure Melanie will be coming up with more quotables. The book will sell like hot pants (oops! that's me, not Melanie) and there will be squeals (oops! there I go again) – sequels pala.

Stand by.

The Philippines is an archipelago of more than 7,100 islands, with a total land area of 115,707 square miles. In terms of land area, the Philippines is almost as large as Italy, larger than New Zealand, twice as big as Greece and very much larger than Britain.

The Philippines is a rugged land of mountains and plains, bays and lakes, rivers and waterfalls, valleys and volcanoes. Its irregular coastline stretches 10,850 statute miles, twice as long as the coastline of the US.

A glance at the world map will show that the Philippines has a very strategic location. No wonder that foreign powers who colonized the islands at various eras became the greatest world power after their coming - and declined after their leaving. Because of its strategic location, the Philippines is destined to play a great role in the world, possibly its greatest role in the near future.

The lowest spot in the world is the "Philippine Deep", situated off the Pacific coast of the archipelago. It is 37,782 feet deep, or 2,142 feet lower than the "Marianas Deep". Mount Everest, the highest mountain in the world, can easily be submerged in the "Philippine Deep", with 8,754 feet of space to spare.

The Philippines is one of the richest countries of the world. God has given the archipelago all the ecology needed to support a great nation - fertile soil, good tropical climate; and rich natural resources.

The Philippines is also one of the most beautiful lands on earth for having scenic panoramas and natural wonders which delight visitors from all corners of the world.

Between Samar and Leyte is the picturesque San Juanico Strait, "the narrowest strait in the world". Manila Bay, with the historic Corregidor Island standing guard at its entrance, is one of the finest harbors in the Asian world.

Terrible typhoons (strong winds and heavy rains) lash the islands of the Philippines annually, especially those close to the Pacific Ocean. The country holds the world's record for the heaviest 24-hour rainfall of over 38.5 inches, which occurred in Manila on October 17, 1967.

Agriculture is the greatest industry of the Filipino people. The potential farming area of the Philippines is 18 million hectares (40,000,000 acres), of which only one-third is cultivated. Among the countries of the world, the Philippine ranks first in coconut and hemp production, second in sugarcane, and fifth in tobacco.

Philippine rivers, lakes and seas teem with fish, shells, pearls, corals, seaweed and other forms of marine wealth. Both the largest and the smallest fish in the world are found in the Philippines. According to marine biologists, the world's largest fish is the whale shark (Rhineodon typus), which is 50 feet or more in length and weighs several tons when fully grown. The smallest fish in the world is Pandaka pygmaea (dwarf pygmy). Its average length is 9.66 millimeters (.38 inches), being 3 millimeters smaller than the famous sinarapan (tabyos) formerly the "smallest fish in the world."

The world's rarest and most expensive shell, called "Glory of the Sea" (Connus gloriamaris), is found in the Philippines. Also found in the archipelago are Tridacna gigas, the world's largest shell which has a length of one meter and weighs 600 pounds, and Pisidum, the smallest shell in the world, which is less than one millimeter long. The world's largest pearl, called "The Pearl of Allah," was found in the Philippines in 1934 at the Palawan Sea by a Muslim diver. It is 9.5 x 5.5 inches and 14 lbs., and worth US$3.5 million. It was given by the local Muslim chief to an American from California, Wilburn Dewall Cobb, for saving his sick son's life in 1936.

The country has rich deposits of gold, silver, iron, copper, lead, manganese, zinc and other metals. It is one of Asia's greatest gold-producing regions. Copper mining is another old industry in the Philippines. The greatest iron-bearing area in the Philippines is Surigao, whose iron ore deposit is estimated at one billion tons, being one of the richest undeveloped deposits in the world. In Masinloc, Zambales exists the biggest deposit of high quality chromites in the world. The world's largest deposit of nickel has been discovered in recent years in Nonoc Isle, of the coast of northern Mindanao.

The Philippines perches precariously on the so-called "ring of fire" of the Pacific which means the country is rocked from time to time by earthquakes, seismic tremors, and volcanic eruptions. Now the Mount Pinatubo volcanic eruption in June 1991 is deemed as the world's worst volcanic eruption in the 20th century. Pinatubo in Zambales Province has replaced the Krakatoa volcanic eruption in Indonesia as the worst recorded volcanic calamity to date. It caused damaged to six nearby provinces and 4 cities worth over P3.3 billion. Some 250,000 families or more than 1 million people were injured or left homeless. It totally destroyed the US Clark Air force Base in Pampanga. Global dust spewed by the volcano has blocked sunlight and affected weather and ozone layer throughout the world.

The Philippines abounds in animal life. Most useful of the Philippine animals is the carabao (water buffalo), the farmer's best friend. Gentle as a domestic pet and slow as a turtle, it is a reliable work-animal like the elephant and is used for tilling rice fields.

More than 750 species of birds, more than those in Australia, Japan, or any other country of Southeast Asia, are found in the Philippines. The largest eagle in the world, called the monkey-eating eagle, is found in the jungles of Luzon and Mindanao. When full grown, it measures five and a half feet in height with a wing span of seven feet. As one of the endangered species of animals in the world, it has attracted the attention of conservationists. Now, it is the national bird of the Philippines.

Other interesting birds in the Philippines are the kalaw, which the Spanish colonizers called the "clock of the mountains" because it makes a loud call from the mountains at noon daily; the wood-thrush, sweetest troubadour of the Philippine skies; the katala, which talks and sings like a human being; the tiny Philippine falconet, measuring only about two and a half inches long, said to be the world's smallest falcon; the Palawan peacock pheasant which struts gracefully like adagio dancer.

Four unique animals in the world are found in the Philippines. They are the tamaraw of Mindoro, which looks like a dwarf carabao and is fierce like a tiger; the tarsius of Bohol, which is reputed to be the smallest monkey in the world; the mouse deer of Palawan, which is the world's smallest deer and the zebronkey, half-zebra and half-donkey, which was bred at the Manila Zoo in 1962.

There are about 25,000 species of insects in the Philippines. The largest Philippine insect is the giant moth, which has a wing span of one foot.

Millions of flowers of all colors and scents bloom all year-round throughout the Philippines. For this reason, many authors call the archipelago the "Land of Flowers". There are about 10,000 species of flowering plants and ferns in the Philippines. Among the beautiful flowers are the lovely sampaguita, the charming cadena de amor, the romantic gardenia, the milky-white camia, the bewitching dama de noche, and the majestic bougainvillea of various colors. The largest flower in the world is the pungapung which grows wild in the forests of Mindanao, It has a diameter of one foot.

The Philippines is one of the world's most beautiful countries which God has embellished with scenic beauty and natural wonders. World famous are the Banaue Ifugao Rice Terraces in northern Luzon, built more than 2,000 years ago by the hardy Ifugao farmers on the massive slopes of the mountains, these terraces rise in gigantic steps toward the clouds. If placed end to end, they would extend 14,000 miles - almost ten times longer than the famous Great Wall of China - more than half of the earth's circumference.

The crowning glory of the natural wonders of the Philippines is Mount Mayon in Albay Province, Southern Luzon. Its majestic beauty thrills all beholders. It surpasses the famous volcanoes of the world in beauty, for it possesses the most beautiful symmetrical volcanic cone. Another Philippine volcano which fascinates global tourist is the tiny Taal Volcano at the center of Lake Taal in Batangas. It is reputed to be the smallest volcano on earth.

The Philippines is the first Republic in Asia, being the first Asian nation to achieve independence by revolution and establish a Republic, led by General Emilio Aguinaldo in 1898-1901.

The Filipinos are predominantly Christian in the Asian region. The Philippines has served as Christianity's lone citadel beneath Asian skies and the light from which the gospel of Jesus Christ has been preached to other Asian countries.

Filipinos are unique for culturally assimilating four heritages - the indigenous Asian, the European, the Latin and the American heritage.

Filipinos are known for their talent in languages. This is exemplified by Dr. Jose Rizal, Philippine national hero, who knew twenty-two languages. According to the findings of Summer Institute of Linguistics of the University of North Dakota (headed by Dr. Richard S. Pittman), there are 55 languages and 142 dialects in the Philippines.

The Filipinos are also the only nation in Asia who speak English and Spanish and have a literature written in these two foreign languages. As a matter of fact, Filipinos take pride in being the third largest English-speaking nation in the world.

The Philippines is the most literate nation in Southeast Asia. The present rate of literacy in the Philippines is 89.27%, the highest among the Southeast Asian nations and also higher than the Arab nations of the Middle East. The main cause for the high literacy in the Philippines is the passionate love of Filipinos for education. As the last governor-general of the Philippines, Frank Murphy, said: "No people ever accepted the blessing of education with more enthusiasm than the Filipino."

Filipino women enjoy the greatest freedom and the highest status among the women in Asia. Economically, politically, and socially, they are considered as the equal of men. They were the first Asian women to enjoy the right of suffrage - to vote in elections and to be voted into public office. Finally, Filipino women are also distinguished for their beauty. Evidently, the blending of Asian, Mexican, Spanish, American blood makes the "mestiza" type of Eurasian-Filipina glamorously lovely and talented, enabling many of them to win in various international beauty contests.

Filipinos rank among the bravest peoples on earth. They valiantly resisted the Spanish, American and Japanese invaders of their native land. To them courage is a badge of manhood, and it has been shown in Filipino soldiers' service during battles and wars. More recently, millions of Filipinos armed only with their faith and courage peacefully won over tanks, armored carriers and planes during the "People Power" Revolution of Feb. 22-25, 1986.

Owing to the effect of their beautiful country, Filipinos are passionately romantic and artistic. They are ardent in love as they are fierce in battle. They are highly intelligent, and according to Dr. David P. Barrows, an American educator, they have "quick perceptions, retentive memory, aptitude and extraordinary docility" making them "most teachable persons."

The Filipinos are also noted for their adaptability, endurance and resiliency. Throughout the ages, they have been lashed by all kinds of suffering - invasions, revolts, revolutions, wars, earthquakes, typhoons, volcanic eruption and epidemics. Probably few peoples on earth, with the exception of the Jews, the Chinese and the Russians, have suffered as much as the Filipinos. Unlike the Polynesians of the Pacific and the Indians of the Americas, they have not vanished in contact with the Europeans. They can assimilate any civilization and thrive in any climate. Against the winds of adversities which regularly visit their land, they simply bend, but never break for they have the durability of the narra (mahogany) tree and resiliency of the bamboo.
Hate Letter Against Filipinos

This is a hate letter coming from a radio talk show host Mr. Art Bell from Nevada. I dont consider myself as patriotic but please read my reply below in BOLD LETTERS and send this to as many of your friends as possible until it reaches him.

Subject: HATE LETTER

This is a very disturbing open E-mail letter to all Filipinos around the world; specially here in North America!, from a man who has the power to reach million of people. (he's a radio talk host)

Please read on..............

This is an open letter email by Art Bell, a radio talk show host in Nevada (more info in the email itself). Here is yet another person who has taken advantage of his power and privilege to use hateful words and racial stereotypes that breed further ignorance and intolerance in our society. Art Bell is a talk radio host who has two shows that he broadcasts from his home in Nevada, that is rebroadcast by 400 stations across the country.

He's written 2 books. He lived in Okinawa, Japan for some years and had a radio program on the English station here. And, though it's hard to believe after reading the following letter from him, he actually has been to the Philippines (he's traveled fairly extensively around the world).

Check out his website listed at the end to get a glimpse at this fool who's spreading this hateful ignorance. And check his wife as well. This letter is

so degrading, I think it's really important that everybody read this and not

attack him, but respond to him in a civilized manner because otherwise his thoughts will be reaffirmed. Understand that not everyone has a viewpoint like we do, and that this is an opinion of someone who hopefully can be changed only by civil actions. - May Munoz

..............................................

Filipinos.....*make me puke* (Art Bell)

As we've all come to notice, in the past few decades, Filipinos have begun to infest the United States like some sort of disease. Their extensive involvement in the U.S. Armed Forces is proof of the trashy kind of qualities all filipinos tend to exhibit on a regular basis. You can see this clearly by studying the attitudes and cultural Icons of most Filipino Americans.

Origins of Pinoys/Pinays:
Are they really asian? Well we've come to accept the fact the filipinos come from a part of the world known as South East Asia. But the term "Asia" is used in the wrong way. You may notice that contemporary Filipino Americans try very hard

to associate themselves with groups that we know as Asian. I cannot count the number of times I have seen a 'Third World' Filipino try to connect themselves to the chinese or Japanese people. There is no connection and here's why. The Philippines is a Third World country. Nothing respectable has EVER been created by Filipino people during our entire human history. Young filipino men in America have become obsessed with "import racing". They have an enormously perverted affection for Japanese cars. It's a common phenomenon. In their minds, these filipinos

somehow believe that they are asian and that it somehow connects them to Japanese people and japanese cars. They often take credit for the ingenuity of Japanese people and say how it's an "Asian thing". This term..."Asian thing" derived directly from African American slang "black thang". "It's a black thang." "It's an asian thang."

You can see the connection. It's even funnier that, in Japan, Filipinos are heavily discriminated against. The only filipinos that can live successfully in Japan are the filipino prostitutes. But that's the case for most Filipino people no matter where they live in the world. Now we've come down to this fact...and it is a fact.

Nothing in Filipino Culture can be seen as Asian.

They have no architectural, artistic, or cultural influence which is in ANY way, asian. Thinking of the great countries in Asia such as Japan, Korea, and China there is no way you can possibly connect the Philippine Islands. This assault by filipino americans to connect themselves with the great peoples of North East Asia is foul and disgusting. Try visiting a young filipino's web site too.

You'll see something called the "Asian IRC Ring". It has to do with the chatrooms. The most horrible thing about this is that these TRASHY people are trying to associate themselves with Asia again!! People in Asia don't act like, this at all. What we are seeing here is the natural Filipino in it's element with full access to technology and this is how they act! You will consistently see this behavior over and over again.

Another interesting thing is that these "thirdworld" people also frequent RC chatrooms such as #chinese #japan and #asian. They must believe that they are some how related racially or culturally to North Asians. But it's completely WRONG! There might have been some distant contact With China and even less with Japan during World War II, but these people are actually more closely related to african americans and Mexican americans.

Do the parents of these young filipinos know what's going on? Would they accept this? I believe that they would and do. This is the natural "Trash" element in filipinos manifesting itself. Nothing good has ever come from Philippines and I don't believe anything good ever will.

Recognizing your Roots (A Message to Filipinos). To all filipino people: Please recognize your ROOTS! You come from the Third World! You country is a disgusting and filthy place. Most people there live in poverty! Your culture has MUCH MORE SPANISH influence than chinese, and absolutely no JAPANESE influence whatsoever. People in Japan and China, do not act like you. They do not constantly talk about sex and they have a MUCH HIGHER level of RESPECT for each other. There is NO WAY that you can connect yourself to Asia other than location.

Your culture and technological advancement does not even come CLOSE to What Chinese, people have done in the past and what Japanese and Korean people are doing now! Everything you do is distinctly filipino. You cannot take credit for Japanese cars, video games, or Hentai! It's not an "asian thing" it's, an "American thing". You have no concept of culture...no concept of asian ideas or asian philosophy! Can you demonstrate how you use Confucianism or Taoism in you everyday life?? You can't. And you will NEVER be able to.

I understand that you are trying to create an identity for yourselves as young people... but it is NOT related to Asia. Your Identity is Filipino. That's all you are. Just Filipino. Think about what that means....

Sincerely,
Art

------------------------------------------

I find this funny, he is right in some ways where we, as Filipinos dont actually have an "Identity". I think this is due to the confusion of our mixed races from Hispanic, Chinese, American and Malay origins. I ee it in malls, imagine young generations wearing ski caps and ski goggles in a tropical country, baggy low rise pants like that of African Americans living in the Bronx of New York, not to mention endless whitening products being sold at department stores and drug stores.

But his ignorance also blinds him from the other truth. That while we may glorify Anime shows and Japanese Internet gaming, he is not aware that a nameless Filipino may be responsible for some technical aspects of some Japanese software. He is not aware of our contribution to the the society in general .Technological advancements that may have aided post war navigations and landing on the moon. That the antibiotic Erythromycin was discovered by Dr. Abelardo Aguilar from Iloilo creating the brand "Ilosone".

Thomas Edison may have discovered the electric light bulb and the fluorescent lighting was thought up by Nikola Tesla. But the fluorescent lamp we use today was invented by Agapito Flores (a Cebuano named Benigno Flores of Bantayan Island, according to the Philippine Daily inquirer), a Filipino scientist. Americans helped then-Philippine leader Ramon Magsaysay to develop it for worldwide commerce. That the personal physician of former U.S. Pres. Bill Clinton is Eleanor "Connie" Concepcion Mariano, a Filipina doctor who was the youngest captain in the US Navy. A Filipino writer Jose Rizal could read and write at age 2, and grew up to speak more than 20 languages, includind Latin, Greek, German, French and Chinese.

Orthat a Filipino genius was responsible for the near hiatus in the PENTAGON and White HOuse nearly infiltrationg their closely guarded secrets with the "ILOVEYOU" bug. Nuisance maybe, but still one heck of a 'beautiful mind'...not to be underestimated.

The list goes on and on, but who cares right? Certainly not Mr. Art Bell...Boy, I'm not surprised.

Perhaps Art Bell does not know that although we consider ourselves ASIAN because we are strategically located in the Southeast asian region of which our nearest neighbors are Malays, ASIA does not mean only Chinese and Japanese race of people. Then maybe it is his connotation that "Asia" meant only our economically successful, paler brothers and he considers Malays such as Thais, Malaysians, Indonesians, and ourselves as a "Third World" race. Then it is "his" ignonimity that would make a civilized person of whatever race puke. Imagine literally connecting Chinese, Koreans and Japanese to the Philippine Islands which is archipelagos away from the countries he has mentioned. I also wonder where he got the impression that we aspire to be Japanese(???) Hispanics maybe but not the Japanese. But even Hispanics today do not mind sharing their "surnames" to their Asian brothers who they have colonized for 3 centuries.

Another sad reality that although most Filipinos working overseas are domestic helpers and prostitutes, who does he think educates the toddlers of Hong Kong, Singapore, Taiwan and Tokyo? Parents of these countries rarely have time spent with their children, leaving them to their Filipino nannies. And with regards to prostitution. Filipinos are not the only ones working as one. I HARDLY SEE FILIPINOS STARRING IN PORN MOVIES. THERE MIGHT BE A FEW FILIPINOS WE HAVEN'T SEEN , BUT MOST ARE FROM MR. ART BELL'S RACE.

He also mentioned that we have no concept of culture..no concept of asian ideas or asian philosophy. How can we demonstrate Confucianism or Taoism in a Christian nation? IS HE INFORMED THAT THE PHILIPPINES IS THE ONLY PREDOMINANTLY CHRISTIAN/CATHOLIC NATION IN ASIA?! YOU HAVE TO USE COMMON SENSE IN A LOT OF THINGS SOMETIMES...

We do not need to create an identity for ourselves. We are who we are. Our identity stems from the anonymity we live in this world. How we contribute silently towards the progress of the world and not just one country. Although the Filipino blood may be tainted with malice, corruption, poverty and prostitution, it is not a perfect race... But so are the others. Maybe

Mr. Art Bell needs to think about this.

WE MAY NOT BE PERFECT MR. BELL BUT AT LEAST WE STILL HAVE VALUES. FOR ONE THING WE DONT PUT OUR AGING PARENTS IN NURSING HOMES BECAUSE "THEY'RE SIMPLY OLD AND WORTHLESS". WE DONT HAVE AS MUCH NUMBERS OF SINGLE MOTHERS WHO GET PREGNANT IN THEIR VERY EARLY TEENS AND EVENTUALLY BECOME PARASITES OF THE GOVERNMENT FOR YEARS AND YEARS.

YES...WE CAME TO YOUR COUNTRY TO WORK, TO EARN DECENT MONEY (HALF OF WHICH BY THE WAY GOES TO TAXES BECAUSE THERE'S SO MANY SOCIAL PARASITES FROM YOUR RACE).AND BY THE WAY, MOST EDUCATED PEOPLE THAT I WORK WITH DONT COME FROM YOUR RACE... THEY'RE ACTUALLY IMMIGRANTS TOO.AND THOSE EDUCATED ONES DO NOT ACT LIKE YOU DO, PERHAPS BECAUSE THEY'VE REALLY BEEN WELL EDUCATED..AFTER ALL THAT'S SAID... WHO IS THE IGNORANT ONCE AGAIN?! - May Munoz
Pinay wins it big in London
By Alfred Yuson
The Philippine Star 05/16/2004

Patricia Evangelista, a 19-year-old, Mass Communications sophomore of University of the Philippines (UP)-Diliman, did the country proud Friday night by besting 59 other student contestants from 37 countries in the 2004 International Public Speaking competition conducted by the English Speaking Union (ESU) in London.

She triumphed over a field of exactly 60 speakers from all over the English-speaking world, including the United States, United Kingdom and Australia, reported Maranan.

The board of judges' decision was unanimous, according to contest chairman Brian Hanharan of the British Broadcasting Corp. (BBC).

PATRICIA'S SHORT SPEECH WORTH READING....

---------------------------------------------------------------------

BLONDE AND BLUE EYES

When I was little, I wanted what many Filipino children all over the country wanted. I wanted to be blond, blue-eyed, and white.

I thought -- if I just wished hard enough and was good enough, I'd wake upon Christmas morning with snow outside my window and freckles across my nose!

More than four centuries under western domination does that to you. I have sixteen cousins. In a couple of years, there will just be five of us left in the Philippines, the rest will have gone abroad in search of "greener pastures." It's not just an anomaly; it's a trend; the Filipino diaspora. Today, about eight million Filipinos are scattered around the world.

There are those who disapprove of Filipinos who choose to leave. I used to. Maybe this is a natural reaction of someone who was left behind, smiling for family pictures that get emptier with each succeeding year. Desertion, I called it. My country is a land that has perpetually fought for the freedom to be itself. Our heroes offered their lives in the struggle against the Spanish, the Japanese, the Americans. To pack up and deny that identity is tantamount to spitting on that sacrifice.

Or is it? I don't think so, not anymore. True, there is no denying this phenomenon, aided by the fact that what was once the other side of the world is now a twelve-hour plane ride away. But this is a borderless world, where no individual can claim to be purely from where he is now. My mother is of Chinese descent, my father is a quarter Spanish, and I call myself a pure Filipino-a hybrid of sorts resulting from a combination of cultures.

Each square mile anywhere in the world is made up of people of different ethnicities, with national identities and individual personalities. because of this, each square mile is already a microcosm of the world. In as much as this blessed spot that is England is the world, so is my neighborhood back home.

Seen thi s way, the Filipino Diaspora, or any sort of dispersal of populations, is not as ominous as so many claim. It must be understood. I come from a Third World country, one that is still trying mightily to get back on its feet after many years of dictatorship. But we shall make it, given more time. Especially now, when we have thousands of eager young minds who graduate from college every year. They have skills. They need jobs. We cannot absorb them all.

A borderless world presents a bigger opportunity, yet one that is not so much abandonment but an extension of identity. Even as we take, we give back. We are the 40,000 skilled nurses who support the UK's National Health Service. We are the quarter-of-a-million seafarers manning most of the world's commercial ships. We are your software engineers in Ireland, your construction workers in the Middle East, your doctors and caregivers in North America, and, your musical artists in London's Wes t End.

Nationalism isn't bound by time or place. People from other nations migrate to create new nations, yet still remain essentially who they are. British society is itself an example of a multi-cultural nation, a melting pot of races, religions, arts and cultures. We are, indeed, in a borderless world!

Leaving sometimes isn't a matter of choice. It's coming back that is. The Hobbits of the shire travelled all over Middle-Earth, but they chose to come

home, richer in every sense of the word. We call people like these balikbayans or the 'returnees' -- those who followed their dream, yet choose to return and share their mature talents and good fortune.

In a few years, I may take advantage of whatever opportunities come my way. But I will come home. A borderless world doesn't preclude the idea of a home. I'm a Filipino, and I'll always be one. It isn't about just geography; it isn't about boundaries. It's about giving back to the country that shaped me.

And that's going to be more important to me than seeing snow outside my windows on a bright Christmas morning.

Mabuhay and Thank you.

____________________________________________________________________
So, be proud, you are a Filipino,...and not like Mr. Art Bell. Please do send this to as many person as you can until it reaches him.

ARROZ CALDO
------------
2 to 3 lb. chicken (cut into serving pieces)
3 tbsp. vegetable or corn oil
2 tbsp. minced garlic
1/4 cup chopped onion
1/2 inch ginger (sliced)

6 cups water
2 cups uncooked rice
1/4 cup chopped scallion
salt or patis (fish sauce) to taste
1/4 tsp. freshly ground pepper

1. In a large pot, heat oil and saute garlic (until brown), onion (until transparent) and ginger.
2. Add chicken and patis (fish sauce) or salt.
3. Let simmer for approximately 5 minutes.
5. Add water and rice.
6. Simmer over low heat for 20 minutes or until rice and chicken are tender -- stir constantly to prevent sticking.
7. Add scallion and pepper. Serve hot.

BIBINGKANG KAKANIN
------------------
1 kilo malagkit rice
gata ng niyog

sugar
young coconut

Cook the malagkit and coconut milk. Put in a bowl, add sugar and young coconut. Stir until well blended. Boil the coconut milk and sugar. Pour on top of the cooked malagkit and bake in the oven for 15 to 20 minutes. Cut into portions and arrange into a serving platter.

CASAVA CAKE
-----------
7 cups cassava, grated
3 pcs. Whole egg
2 1/2 cups sugar

1 can condensed milk
1/4 cup margarine

Mix all the ingredients in a saucepan until texture becomes fine. Arrange the mixture in a muffin pan. Bake for 30 to 35 minutes. Serve

PALABOK
-------
1/2 k. pancit bihon (noodles)
2 cups instant palabok sauce
3 eggs, hardcooked
8 skinless longganisa

2 tbsps. Cooking oil
1 small bag of crispy squid rings
calamansi
kinchay leaves or chopped onion leaves
Prepare the palabok sauce as directed on the box to make two cups. Set aside.

Immerse the bijon noodles in boiling stock or hot water by using a sieve . (Do not immerse continuously, but bob the sieve up and down in the boiling water till the noodles get soft. This is how the term "luglog" actively originated.)

After the noodles have softened and are still warm, lay them out evenly on a pan.

Peel the hardcooked eggs and chop the eggyolks and eggwhites separately for a more colorful presentation. Set aside.

Heat the cooking oil and put all the unwrapped longganisa meat in a pan. Stir-fry till crisp. You can also cut the longganisa meat in a pan and broil in a turbo broiler. This takes longer but uses less oil. This replaces the traditional chicharon and tinapa.

To assemble: Make a colorful pattern of the crisp longganisa meat, crunchy squid rings, chopped eggs and chopped green onions.

PALITAW
-------
1 kilo galapong malagkit
1 pc. Coconut shredded

1/4 k. sugar

Mold the galapong into desired shape. In a sauce pan, pour in boiling water. As soon as it floats, remove from heat. Serve with shredded coconut and sugar on top.

PANSIT LOMI GISADO
------------------

2 tbsp. cooking oil

1/2 cup thinly sliced carrots

1/2 cup thinly sliced baguio beans
2 cups shredded cabbage

1 7g sachet flavor-it super ginisa
1/4 cup chopped celery

1 cup water

250 grams fresh lomi, blanched

2 whole eggs, beaten

1. Heat oil, saute carrots and baguio beans for 3 minutes. Add cabbage and cook for another 2 minutes.
2. Stir in flavor-it super ginisa and celery. Put in water and simmer for 3 minutes. Toss in lomi and beaten eggs, mix to coat lomi with the sauce and eggs and cook for 5 minutes more.

SAPIN SAPIN
-----------

1 1/2 cups malagkit dough (galapong)
1/2 cup rice galapong
2 1/2 cups white sugar
3 cups cooked ubi (mashed)

4 cups thick coconut cream (from 2-3 coconuts)
2 cans (big) condensed milk
food coloring; violet & egg-yellow

Blend all ingredients except mashed ubi and food coloring.
DIVIDE INTO 3 PARTS:

To one part - add mashed ubi. To heighten the color of the ubi, add a dash of violet food coloring. Mix well.

To 2nd part - add egg-yellow coloring. Mix well.

To 3rd part - just plain white, nothing to add.

Grease a round baking pan. Line with banana leaves and grease the leaves. Then, pour in ubi mixture. Spread evenly. Steam for 30 minutes or more, until firm. Note: cover the baking pan with cheese cloth before steaming.

Pour 2nd layer on top of the cooked ubi. Cover again and steam for 30 minutes.

Lastly, pour in 3rd layer or the plain mixture. Again, steam for 30 minutes or until firm.
Sprinkle top with "latik".
Cool before slicing.
Serve with "budbod" or toasted sweetened coconut.

PORK BINAGOONGAN
----------------

1 kilo pork kasim, cubed
water
2 cloved garlic, minced
1 onion, chopped

2 pieces tomato, chopped
1 cup bagoong alamang
5 teaspoon sugar to taste
1/4 cup vinegar

Put pork in a skillet with some water. Cook until water has evaporated and pork exudes oil. In the oil, sauté garlic, onion and tomatoes. Add bagoong and stir-fry until color changes. Add sugar and vinegar. Cook, uncovered until it boils and the pork is tender.

MENUDO
------

1 lb. pork, cubed
1 cup liver, cubed
1 tbsp. oil
2 tsps. achuete seeds
1 tbsp. garlic, minced

1/3 cup onions, chopped
1/2 cup tomatoes, sliced
2 medium sized potatoes cut into 1/2 inch pieces
2 tsps. salt
1/8 tsp. pepper

Get color from achuete seeds (Place seeds in 1/3 cup water and stir around. Water should turn red.) then discard when done. Saute garlic, onions and tomatoes; add pork and cook until done. Add potatoes and water, if the dish is a little dry. Add liver when potatoes are done. Season as desired and bring to a boil. Serve hot with rice.

LECHON KAWALI
-------------

kilo pork belly or liempo
4 cups water
2 tbsps salt
1 tsp msg (optional)

Lechon Liver Sauce:
4 cups liver paste
3/4 cup native vinegar
1 1/2 cups water

1/3 cup bread crumbs
1/2 cup sugar
1 pack kasubha
1 pc bay leaf or laurel
salt & pepper to taste
1/4 tsp msg (optional)
2 tbsps cooking oil or lard
1 head garlic, minced
6 pcs shallots, finely sliced

Boil pork belly in water and salt and msg until skin can be pinched easily. Remove from fire and drain. Cool and air-dry. Deep-fry in kawali or deep saucepan until tiny blisters appear on the skin.

Chop into serving pieces and serve with lechon-liver sauce.

Lechon Liver Sauce: Mix liver paste, vinegar, water, breadcrumbs, sugar, 1/2 of the kasubha, laurel, salt, pepper and msg. Blend well and set aside.

Saute garlic in cooking oil. Add the onions and fry until tender. Add the liver mixture. Boil without stirring. Do not cover the saucepan.

Add the rest of the breadcrumbs dispersed in 1 cup of water. Cook till it thickens.

Serve sauce topped with the rest of the crisp brown garlic and fried kasubha.

TOKWAT BABOY
------------
1/2 kilo pork (cut into chunk cubes)
5 pieces tokwa (beancurd)
2 heads garlic (minced)
1 cup vinegar

1 cup soy sauce
1 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon brown sugar
3 small onions (diced)

1. In a casserole, boil pork in just enough water with salt, lower fire and let simmer until pork is tender.

2. Take the pork out and set aside.

3. Fry tokwa in hot oil until toasted and slice to the same size as the pork.

4. In a saucepot, mix vinegar, soy sauce, salt garlic and onions and heat for just a few minutes.

5. Pour in mixture over pork and tokwa.

6. Serve hot.

BEEF CALDERETA
--------------
1/4 cup olive oil
2 tablespoon crushed garlic
2 cups chopped onion
1 1/2 cup chopped fresh tomatoes
3/4 cup chopped green bell pepper
3/4 cup chopped red bell pepper
1 kilo beef sirloin cubed
1/4 kilo liver
2-3 cups beef stock

1 tablespoon tomato paste
patis, salt & pepper to taste
1/2 cup green olives
3-4 pieces chili pepper, chopped
1 teaspoon cornstarch dissolved in water
1/2 cup all purpose cream
1/2 cup grated queso de bola or other cheese
1 red bell pepper, cut into strips

Heat oil in a saucepan then sauté garlic, onion, tomatoes and peppers. Add beef cubed and liver. Saute for a few minutes then remove liver. Add beef stock and tomato paste. Simmer until beef is tender. Season to taste then add olives, chili pepper and dissolved cornstarch. Mash the liver and then add back to the pan. Cook until sauce is thick then add the cream and cheese. Transfer to a platter and top with red bell pepper strips.
Gov't pleads: Spare life
of Filipino hostage
Posted:1:40 AM (Manila Time) | Jul. 10, 2004
By Juliet Labog-Javellana
Inquirer News Service

THE GOVERNMENT appealed Friday for the life of the Filipino held hostage in Iraq citing the Philippines' "long history of working with the people of Iraq," and how Filipinos "in the tens of thousands" had helped that country "build its roads, bridges and other infrastructure."

President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo's spokesperson Ignacio Bunye said the appeal, issued by Foreign Secretary Delia Albert, was made at the end of a three-hour meeting of the Cabinet Oversight Committee on Internal Security (COCIS) in Malacañang, which Ms Arroyo called to deal with the abduction of truck driver Angelo de la Cruz by Iraqi militants.

It was the second meeting of the COCIS in as many days since the hostage crisis started.

In her appeal, Albert also said that De la Cruz was part of this tradition of assistance.

"He wishes nothing more than an honest day's wage to feed his wife and eight young children. He has not committed any acts of violence against the Iraqi people, nor does he wish them ill," Albert said of De la Cruz.

She added: "His life should be spared and he should be allowed to be reunited with his family in the Philippines.

"His death will not achieve any useful purpose. If those who hold him hope to promote their cause, compassion and mercy should be their guiding principle."

Earlier in the day, the President announced that Ambassador Roy Cimatu was under orders to secure the release of De la Cruz, whom his captors had threatened to behead if the Philippines did not pull out its troops in 72 hours.

The deadline lapses at 2 a.m. Sunday, Manila time. But in another video footage aired on Thursday, Arab TV Al-Jazeera reported that two men described as Bulgarian workers were being held in Iraq under threat of death unless US troops free Iraqi prisoners within 24 hours.

Ms Arroyo did not name the Filipino hostage in her speech at the Philippine International Convention Center, although she said the crisis called for national solidarity and prayer.

"Let's pray for the safe and immediate release of one of our workers who had been abducted in Iraq. Ambassador Cimatu is in Baghdad to do what is humanly possible to secure the release of our kababayan," she said.

Ms Arroyo also imposed a news blackout on the negotiations for De la Cruz's release.

"I shall not comment about the situation at this most crucial and sensitive point in time, when we have to withhold information on our moves to ensure the safety of the hostage," she said, adding:

"I ask the media not to fan speculation or hysteria. A higher national interest is involved in this matter."

While the members of the COCIS, chaired by Executive Secretary Alberto Romulo, was meeting at the Presidential Guesthouse, Ms Arroyo was meeting with De la Cruz's family at the Palace Music Room.

De la Cruz's wife Arsenia came with seven of their eight children, his father Feliciano, sister-in-law Norma and uncle-in-law Alberto Pineda. They arrived in Malacañang at about 5 p.m. in a Clark Development Corp. bus.

Labor Secretary Patricia Sto. Tomas said the President assured the weeping family during the 30-minute meeting that "the entire government" was working to secure De la Cruz's safe release.

Sto. Tomas said that as soon as the President entered the room, Arsenia broke into tears and hugged her.

"Most of the time the conversation was in Kapampangan, but toward the end [Arsenia] made an appeal to all good-hearted Muslims all over the world to help her husband because he is only working so that he can provide food to his children and send them to school," Sto. Tomas said.

The labor secretary said she did not recall Arsenia asking the President to yield to the hostage-takers' demand: "She just said that they are hoping everything will be done to secure her husband's safe and immediate release because he is not a soldier, not a combatant."

Sto. Tomas said the family also asked for privacy. "It's a very stressful thing that every 10-15 minutes they are asked [about the matter]. Everybody starts crying," she said.

First crisis

Ironically, the President talked about the first crisis facing her new administration during the Overseas Employment Summit, which tackled measures meant to protect the thousands of Filipinos leaving each year for greener pastures abroad.

"I leave it to our Iraq team to do what has to be done, in coordination with the transition government of Iraq and our allies, to get the hostage home safely," Ms Arroyo said in her speech at the summit held at the PICC.

She reiterated her order for the suspension of the deployment of workers to Iraq pending the resolution of the hostage crisis.

Albert said at a briefing in Malacañang that Cimatu would assist Philippine Charge d'Affaires Ricardo Endaya in Baghdad in seeking the release with the help of an official of the Iraqi Governing Council.

She said the Iraqi official also helped Endaya in the release of a Filipino driver, Francisco Pagcalinawan, similarly abducted last April.

Sto. Tomas also cited this Iraqi official in the course of expressing confidence that negotiators would be able to link up with De la Cruz's captors.

According to Sto. Tomas, one of the reasons for the success of the previous negotiation was it was not conducted "in full view of everybody."

Albert also said the situation was "very sensitive."

"So let's please leave the negotiators, let our people keep the lines open. We are hoping for the best because a life is at stake. The government is doing its utmost best. The lines of communication are open," she said.

The influential Catholic Church added its voice to the call for the government to do everything to save De la Cruz.

Manila Archbishop Gaudencio Rosales called on government leaders to seriously consider De la Cruz's plight before making a final decision on the matter.

"That will again be a political decision because there are some commitments [of the government], but we reiterate to the government that it should consider these [commitments] if they are connected with the life of Angelo," Rosales said in an interview at the World Trade Center.

The Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines said De la Cruz's abduction had caused extreme sadness among some 4,000 Filipino clergy, who concluded a weeklong national congress in Pasay City Friday.

Activist priest Robert Reyes initiated a signature campaign to save the life of De la Cruz. The petition was passed among the priests and bishops at the World Trade Center, and De la Cruz was also especially mentioned in the concluding Mass of the congress.

"We join his family, his province mates, and the entire nation in storming the heavens that he be spared this ultimate cruelty. We also pray for his tormentors, that the Lord will soften their hearts so that they will release Angelo," Davao Archbishop Fernando Capalla, CBCP president, said in a statement.

Various personalities weighed in on the issue.

Speaker Jose de Venecia Jr. advised Executive Secretary Romulo that Al-Jazeera could hold the key to the safe release of De la Cruz.

De Venecia said Philippine diplomatic officials in Baghdad and in Doha, Qatar, the home base of Al-Jazeera, could touch base with its correspondents "to see how we can sit down [with the insurgents] and work out an arrangement."

But militant party-list representatives in the House strongly called for the pullout.

Anakpawis Rep. Rafael Mariano that 24 hours was "long enough for the President to immediately withdraw the 51-member Philippine contingent, retract the government's policy of support to the United States' unjust occupation of Iraq, and pave the way for the safe and immediate release of De la Cruz."

"We can no longer afford to sacrifice another Filipino migrant worker's life for the sake of the US monopolistic agenda in the Arab region," Mariano said.

Gabriela Rep. Liza Maza said Ms Arroyo could save the life of De la Cruz if she could "muster the political will to defy, for one, her commitment to the US government."

Lone voice

Sen. Panfilo Lacson was the lone voice in the Senate advocating the pullout of troops.

Had he been elected president, Lacson said, he would immediately order the pullout.

"It's not because we are giving in to the demands of the Iraqi terrorists, but because it was wrong, in the first place, to send the troops in Iraq," he told ANC TV.

But Senators Manuel Villar and Rodolfo Biazon said Philippine troops should remain in Iraq.

Villar, who had previously sought the withdrawal of the troops, told reporters that he was pitching a different line because "we missed the opportunity" to pull out with the hostage taking.

He said the government could have avoided this incident had it withdrawn the troops earlier.

Biazon said this was not the time to consider a pullout "because this will have more serious consequences."

In a separate interview, he said "national honor" was also involved.

Sen. Aquilino Pimentel said the first thing the government should do was negotiate with the Iraqis. He said the Philippines was in a good negotiating position because De la Cruz was not in Iraq to commit an act of aggression.

Vice President Noli de Castro said in a statement that De La Cruz's abduction was "a terrorist act."

He said the Philippine government should not be cowed or blackmailed by acts of terrorism.

But he added: "We should do everything to save the life of Angelo. The life of every Filipino in the country and overseas is important. All concerns must be considered. But at the moment, the crucial move is to get Angelo back alive."

Posted @ http://www.inq7.net/nat/2004/jul/21/nat_2-1.htm

MEXICO, Pampanga -- A wave of jubilation swept Angelo de la Cruz's family and friends when footage of him in the custody of Philippine officials in the United Arab Emirates was shown on television late Wednesday afternoon.

Weeping for joy and hugging one another, they expressed thanks to President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo for her support of the family and for the government's efforts to secure Angelo's release.

"We're quite happy but we will be really, really happy once we see the President holding our brother. Thank you to everyone," said Angelo's brother Feliciano Jr.

The small community in Barangay Buenavista where the De la Cruzes live is actually in the thick of preparing for the homecoming of the 46-year-old truck driver taken hostage by Iraqi militants in Baghdad on July 4.

The tasks of cooking, welcoming guests, mounting a program, managing traffic, even cleaning the De la Cruz home, were assigned to various persons in the community at a meeting that started at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday in the house of Barangay captain Alfredo Pineda.

Earlier in the day, Malacañang advised Pampanga Governor Mark Lapid to start preparations even without official word of the hostage's release.

Lapid told De la Cruz's sisters and local officials that outgoing Social Welfare Secretary Corazon Soliman issued the directive at 10 a.m. He quoted Soliman as saying that "it's better to be prepared."

"We are just preparing, thinking of this in a positive way. We don't want disorder in the village when he returns," the governor said of De la Cruz, adding: "I'm 100-percent sure he is [coming] home within a few days. Kung puwede nga, ngayon na (If it's possible, today)."

The provincial, municipal and barangay governments were represented at the meeting.

Among those present were Lucia Gutierrez, Pampanga social welfare officer; Susan Dimabuyu, Central Luzon social welfare coordinator; Jesus Punzalan, Mexico municipal engineer; Allan Bonifacio, coordinator of the organization for overseas Filipino workers, Migrante, and a number of teachers in the village.

Grand event

Mexico Mayor Teddy Tumang said the local government would spend for what he described as a "grand" homecoming.

Lapid said he had no idea how many guests would arrive but expected them to come from all walks of life.

"I'm happy. I love my brother," declared Beth Reyes, a younger sister of Angelo's. "I'd like to go to the airport when he comes, and to Malacañang to thank the President."

Willie de la Cruz, Angelo's younger brother who is also an overseas worker, arrived in the village on Monday night to join the family in waiting for Angelo.

On Angelo's return to the country, his eight children who had been staying in an undisclosed villa at the Clark Special Economic Zone during the entire hostage crisis will be taken to the Ninoy Aquino International Airport to be reunited with their parents, Lapid said.

He said the De la Cruz family would then call on Ms Arroyo in Malacañang.

Angelo's wife Arsenia and his brother Jesse were earlier flown by the Philippine government to Amman, Jordan, to be closer to developments.

Lapid said it would be up to the family members to decide whether they would proceed at once to Buenavista or head to Clark.

In Manila, government officials began studying options for Angelo's arrival.

Sources said they were studying whether Ms Arroyo would go to the NAIA to welcome Angelo, or to Buenavista.

Crisis committee

At the Department of Labor and Employment, a new crisis management committee was formed by Labor Secretary Patricia Sto. Tomas as part of the government's reaction to Angelo's abduction.

The committee is headed by Labor Undersecretary Manuel Imson; its members are the administrators of the Philippine Overseas Employment Administration and the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration, and the director of the DOLE's International Labor Affairs Service.

Its objective is to strengthen security measures for all Filipino workers in war-torn or high-risk countries.

At the same time, Sto. Tomas ordered all Philippine Overseas Labor Offices (POLOs) to update their monthly registry of employers and Filipino workers and to designate a staff officer in each company to take charge of the security and monitoring of Filipino workers.

Sto. Tomas stipulated that a Filipino worker, who would monitor the security of his co-workers, would also be designated as a counterpart of the companies' staff officer.

"Once the focal persons are identified, the Polo shall immediately conduct an orientation training on matters relating to coordination and assistance, and enforce a realistic security plan," Sto. Tomas said in her directive.
Posted: The Manila Bulletin Online
URL: http://www.mb.com.ph/OPED2004062812860.html

(Marcelo H. del Pilar, better known by his pen name, Plaridel, was the soul of the Propaganda Movement which preceded the Philippine Revolution of 1896. He founded the Diariong Tagalog in 1882 where he denounced the Spanish maladministration of the Philippines. In Madrid, he founded and for five years edited the La Solidaridad, the organ of the Filipino expatriate activists. The Samahang Plaridel is reprinting his editorials, as translated from Spanish by Guadalupe Fores Ganzon).

THE press in the Philippines is cowed, reduced to singing praises to those in power. It is not in a position to be the faithful organ of the needs of that vast Archipelago.

To what social entity can we attribute this condition? To the government? But this cannot be responsible, because all capable officials who desire to comply with the sacred duty of working for the happiness of the governed should be aware of the daily pulse of public opinion. The smallest mistake in the diagnosis will endanger the treatment and expose it to the justified malediction of the patient.

Neither will this agree with the interests of the country. To condemn the nation to suffer and to remain silent is not a good way of solving difficulties which produce – and have to produce – the occult sighs, the tears shed in the privacy of the homes because of stupid oppressions. Vexations are always oppressions, no matter what is said in sealed documents. Unjust vexations, temporary imprisonments which become permanent with or without court decisions, the mysterious deportations, and other threats to the security of the individual, to the sanctity of his home and property – all these evils produce despair among the Filipino people. Without a press to make known their grievances, the people cannot offer a bright future to the well-being of Spain.

A gagged press is not only useless in promoting national interests, but also dangerous, very dangerous indeed, to the prestige and future well-being of Spain, that remote region.

Because the natives of the Philippines cannot express their ideas in view of the law which suppresses them, they go only where there is intellectual freedom. Thus we witness how the press on the other side of the ocean and the Pyrenees talk of the faults which we do not wish to see, evils which, sad to say, stimulate effectively either the selfish or humanitarian motives of foreign nations.

On our part we seriously recommend the protection of public opinion in the Philippines. It is necessary to win the natives and to prevent their alienation. The Spanish government should know and grant the people’s legitimate aspirations, because instead of favoring the interests of the friars who collect, it should favor those of the nation who pays. Since the natives of the Archipelago have not been condemned to slavery, the government should know how to assure them the exercise of their natural rights.

It behooves us therefore to think of the liberty of the press in the Philippines.

Punish immediately every abuse committed by the press; use against such abuse every repressive method of punishment but do away with restrictions which, after all, are ineffective and will in the future bring about incalculable damage and serious problems.

An open letter to the Filipino people

Watching the news when Poe announced his intention to run, I panicked when I
saw him mumble when he was asked about his economic policies and he said...
what did he say? Nothing, that's what. You'd think if you were going to
announce your presidential ambitions you would have at least prepared
something -- anything -- on how you were going to lead the country aside
from the overused line about being the savior the masses need.

The biggest bias against Poe is not that he is an actor, but that he may
lack the skills, temperament, and attitude to become a leader. People say he
has such a kind heart, unquestionable sincerity and that he has helped a lot
of people through the years -- shouldn't this be enough? No, it's not.
I need my president -- whoever he or she is -- to be better than the average Juan.
I want him to know history and poetry as well as economics, to be able to
quote Shakespeare and argue with Allan Greenspan, to stand
shoulder-to-shoulder with the world's most powerful leaders, to make me
proud -- not to make me laugh when I see him on TV.

I want to love my president and I want to respect him.
I want a president who doesn't have to surround himself with
economists to
know how to run the country. I want him to know these things on his own and
listen to advice but not be influenced by people who have a different agenda.
I want to talk about my president to foreigners without being
embarrassed,
without shaking my head and saying, "Well, Filipinos aren't the most mature electorate in the universe."
I don't want to hear that Filipino doctors are now studying to become nurses
just to apply for jobs abroad or college students choosing their courses
based on what the most popular jobs are in other countries.

Sincerity is a beautiful thing, but it's not the only thing that makes a
president great. In 1998, when Estrada was elected, I was hoping he would
succeed, that since he was wildly popular and beloved, he was going to do
good. But look what he did. He surrounded himself with advisers and friends,
he drank and he womanized -- oh how he womanized and how they built their
mansions. Does anybody remember any of this?

It was as if he was chipping away at the stature of the presidency and the
country piece by piece. He said the most god- awful embarrassing things at
the most unfortunate moments. The things that saw print, they weren't even
close to what editors wouldn't print because they were just so stupid and
depressing. He didn't inspire the poor to do better he just fueled their
anger and pointed it to the wrong direction. You don't have a house?
You
don't have a job? Blame the past presidents, blame the rich, blame the
middle class. He never said, well, why don't you get off your asses and look for work?

He didn't encourage people to work harder because he didn't improve the
economy. He blamed the rich, played to the poor and completely forgot about
the middle class who didn't cheat on their taxes or steal other people's
land. Like Estrada, Poe polarizes people. It's the kind that creates so much
anger and distrust on both sides. This early, the people surrounding him are
far from reassuring. Tito Sotto? After showing his fantastic grasp of
economics, of what drives foreign exchange? Hello? This is not the TV
variety show "Eat Bulaga," sir. Nobody is laughing. Somebody should pinch
Poe and tell him this is not the movies. That he cannot fight off our Asian
neighbors for measly investment with his magic sword. Estrada and now "Ang
Panday" [Poe's movie character]. It's so depressing I want to cry.

A friend warned me about pissing off Poe. She said, "Be careful what you
write about him, he may be your next president."

What's he gonna do, drop an anvil on my head?

(Written by S. Almagro, forwarded to the CITAA Las Vegas
International forum by Ben Almagro.)

Kindly pass this on as our help to enlighten our people.

It's Mel Gibson's "The Passion of the Christ".
Never has a film about Jesus (Christ), so
talked about, so debated, so much so that
see for ourselves, what all the fuzz
is about. It is rated R so children cannot see it
though, they say it is too graphic for them.
Some also say that a lot of people
will not be able to watch on the big screen how Jesus
While driving home, the ferocious pangs of the
Activate our wonder quotient. Enjoyment reserves no place.
Somebody said, "people lose perspective when they can't see the stars."
It makes sense. We can be in Disneyland where stars proliferate, and without
observing them, you'd never know that.
With this lo-o-o-o-o-n-n-nng intro, what am I driving at? That
Philippines is still a beautiful, lovely island as ever!!! Despite the Abu Sayyaf
